I don't understand why the takeaway from this is always that korea is racist and that it's weird that they're so obsessed over skin and etc.. and the message is that koreans should be more accepting. if you really thought about it, it's really just a beauty standard that most koreans have subscribed to, and that there's nothing really inherently wrong with it, it's just how it is. everybody has their own beauty preferences, for themselves, for others, things like jawlines, nose shapes, eye colour, etc, and nobody sees those as a problem, and nobody tells others to change their beauty preferences even though it's the same thing. the real lesson is that korea is not a paradise and that it shouldn't be glorified, and you shouldn't care too much about other's opinions on beauty. and don't ask "why can't it be both?" because we all know that you're probably no better in other ways

western beauty standards are just as funny with the ugly tanning especially women

as an east asian the reason we like lighter skin generally is becuz back in de olden days the peasants who worked in the fields got like sunburned while the nobility and rich stayed in and had paler skin so over time the cultural norms developed in a way that favored those with lighter skin. doesn't mean that we're racist, generally speaking our culture just thinks of lighter skin as more attractive (also i can totally relate to this lol every time i visit my home country my grandma and grandpa say i look indian cuz my skin just gets super dark in the us. and then over the course of the vacation my skin gets lighter and lighter naturally because for some reason the air there is just different or something idk and then i come back and become dark again.)
